Adult Education Class Descriptions
ESOL: English for Speakers of Other Languages (“ESOL”) instruction teaches students basic language skills, as well as the academic and civic skills they need to successfully complete higher education or job training programs. The emphasis is on improving English skills in speaking, reading, writing, and listening. Instructional themes include work, family, citizenship, and topics based on student interests.
Basic Education: Adult Basic Education (“ABE”) instruction emphasizes skills related to adult literacy needs, educational goals, and personal interests. Real-world materials are used to enhance the educational experience of the adult learner. Adults enrolled in ABE classes can begin with basic literacy skills and advance to high school equivalency preparation and vocational training.
High School Equivalency - English: The high school equivalency test in New York State, formerly known as the GED, is now called the
Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC). Preparation classes for this test provide adult learners with instruction in subject areas and skills required to pass the equivalency exam and include a review of the required forms as well as simulated practice exams. Preparation for the TASC is also offered in Computer Assisted Instruction labs at the
Adult Learning Centers. The TASC assesses Language Arts (Reading and Writing), Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.
High School Equivalency - Spanish: These classes prepare for the same U.S. high school test but all classes and testing are in Spanish.
